I know it's been over 5 years but wanted to bump this, has anyone had any actual experience with trying to enter Japan/notify PPU or their intent to travel? As far as I'm aware I don't need permission, just to notify them with over a weeks' notice, so I'm not sure if they're able to do anything, so would love to hear other people's experience.

Japan has always been somewhere I've dreamed about going, and being on an indefinite SHPO I'm not sure when I'll be free of that burden.

I was informed those with an inside sentence are barred. Taking it to the "limit" due to the japanese culture of "cartoons" I was told by my then PO that they would not allow. Mind you he beleived going to Thailand to see family was a "sexual explotation trip".

Japan and Aus have always been on my "bucket" list but I have to get off the SOR before that challange; but good look and I will watch this post.
