Telling a child about a conviction

I was convicted of possessing 30 images eight years ago. My daughter, who has special needs, has reached 16 and social services want to tell her about me 'to keep her safe'. As if  telling a child her father is a  monster is likely to improve her well being.Despite a court ruling granting me unsupervised access they have never allowed it. My question is, are there any resources or guidelines on when or how to tell a child about such a conviction? I am awaare of Lucy Faithfull but it is literally impossible to get through. Anyone got any ideas? I dont trust social services to do this in an appropriate or fair way.
