A signal that the system is too suffocating perhaps? If 900 is true, that isn't just one or two... With the shocking figure of 100,000 now on the register (which obviously excludes the horrendous number of suicides) and the increase of those unspent/unemployable, the work for police post-sentence is just going to increase. Simon Bailey's thoughts were that we can't arrest our way out of this, but disappointingly he's now gone...

Yes, but another of Sarah Champions assumptions is that over 900 SO have simply disappeared. They changed their names and now the police do not know where they are anymore.

It does ignore the fact that anyone trying this and not notifying the police of an alias is guilty of an offence and is most likely off to prison.

I would have to disagree there it does get picked up by DBS, part of the application is to state if you have been know by any other names, if you were not to declare the name change it would get picked up by DBS when the application was processed as they would see discrepancies when they did the ID check against other data bases like national insurance check and passport check. I think the issue in the article should more look at offenders that actively try to hide there information from the police

The loophole relates to individuals who do not declare a name change to police. If they tell the police then DBS would be updated, but if the person changes their name by deed poll, does not tell police, and then applies for a DBS check with the new name, it won't show up. It also assumes that the employer does not ask for any id like a passport or driving licence, to verify the persons name.

So in reality the numbers of people doing this are very small and the risks are very low, but the MP simply assumes that all SO are trying to do this, so that they can reoffend. Sarah Champion claims that 16,000 SO have breached their notification requirements and she just assumes that this means they have all changed their names and are actively trying to reoffend.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, so I don’t understand why they think individuals with SOs could even do this.

This really angers me when i read things like this, these people have no idea how the system works, a name change is picked up when you undertake a DBS check there is no way round it. Again its just filling headlines and trying to stir issues when there is no need. They never seem to run a story on how PPU dont do there job correctly

the story suggests there is a loophole, but is there?
