My comments on updates is that when (I think) Win 10 came out, MS removed the ability to select downloads you wanted but there was a work around. I understand your point about major OS updates but I am really mentioning the "others".

OS providers do/will always try and force what they think we need and not just for "promoting their product against others but to try and fix the software bugs they need to resolve.

I've just been helping a friend who is an Apple believer for his sins. He has multi types from phones, desktop, iPad and laptop. He can no longer can get updates or log into his iCloud. Main reason; though not only reason, is Apple change their hardware/software technology a couple of years back, Now these older machines are not capable of installing / running the updates required today. Apple are really "sales focused".

It's being rolled out, but it's now opt in and protected by Windows Hello. The saved data is encrypted and doesn't leave your device. Functionally it's an AI version of the existing search and index mechanism which has been around for decades and which also creates searchable on disk metadata from your PCs files. It actually looks quite useful, but I'm also understanding of those who are suspicious of it. If you don't want the Recall feature don't install it.

You also do not have to update to 24H2 at the moment if you don't want to but bear in mind that all these feature updates have their own end of life cycle dates (think of them as new versions of Windows), and will eventually be force fed as older releases go out of support. Typically each major OS update is fully supported for 2 years, and then goes on extended support.

(I suspect you are talking about looking into stopping this feature update, but for others reading this at a later date and maybe confusing an OS feature update with Windows Update, I really would not recommend disabling Windows Update.)

I saw this BUt in the small print didn't they say they were now not rolling it out? In future it may be an option.

Ill try and dig out the article but also look into how you can stop updates. Fingers crossed

Another story about devices spying on you caught my eye this week. Microsoft's co-pilot will soon include a program called Recall which takes screenshots of your activity.

It was going to be activated by default, until people complained about it, so now you have to opt in, but I'm already unhappy about all the updates I receive, because you don't know what you are going to get until you restart the device. For example, co-pilot was slipped in under the radar, and I had no idea until I spotted the icon.

But at least if you have a problem with the PPU, saying you can't use certain apps because they don't keep any history, you can now say to them that all your internet activity has been recorded and is available for them to see.
