+xHi, thanks for the reply! I’m going to speak with a driving instructor training school soon to see if I can apply before embarking on training. I’ve put it off for a few weeks, scared of disappointment, guess I just need to do it. I’m not sure about the sherif court thing, as far as I’m aware it will always remain on record despite being “spent”. It’s something I certainly will look into. It was a stupid mistake I made in my younger years and at 36 years of age I’m not going to make any mistakes like that again. I’ve got two kids, a job, a mortgage, a partner and way too much to lose to even consider breaking the law again. It’s something that’s held me back a lot in life as I’ve always felt so embarrassed by if that I don’t try to progress. Over the years I’ve worked a lot on myself, there were reasons that I did what I did, not that I what sympathy or trying to make excuses but I’ve worked on those issues and I’m now at peace with the past. I’m finally ready to try and move forward even if it means telling people about my conviction. Although it’s “spent” it never really is as I feel potential employers will always offer someone with no convictions a job before someone like me. Well, it's true that stuff will always be on your police record, but that is between you and the police. Disclosure Scotland only put on your PVG what the rules tell them to, and if the sheriff agrees that it should not be disclosed any more then Disclosure Scotland will stop disclosing it. Once a conviction is spent, then it can only be shown on the higher levels of check, unless a sheriff decides otherwise. If you were going for a job that was eligible for a basic check, then you would have nothing to disclose. Even if you do have to disclose, having a conviction might make the difference if there's not much to choose between the candidates, but any reasonable employer should give the job to someone who is clearly the best candidate.
