Interesting thing was where I was the prison had plenty of departments such as Paints, Gardens, etc but when I spoke to an OMU officer near the end of my "stay" he said chances were probation wouldn't allow anyone in those trades to visit other peoples houses without disclosure first so practically prohibiting them going to carry out a trade. I also noted the amount of inmates doing the Forklift truck course to discover afterwards the big obstacle when applying for work was the employer didn't want drivers without experience.

It would seem the prison service didn't do any research into the type of in prison work training on offer at all. Indeed they didn't appear to liase with all the departments within the prison. Maybe not too surprising.

The House of Commons Work and Pensions Select Committee have launched an inquiry into the benefits and employment support available to people with convictions when they leave prison.

They are interested in hearing from anybody who has had experience of the prison system.

The deadline for consultation is 15th July 2016.
