Maybe IanC can help advise with this one or if anybody else has any experience in TEFL abroad....? I'm considering going abroad and teach English as a Foreign language. I did do some before over 10 years ago. I'm interested in teaching in China. I've been there before and on the whole like the culture and people and it's food. After returning from my stint abroad, I can remember reading that for example Thailand and I think other places too had started insisting on Subject Access certificates (are they called certificates?) in order to teach there. Of course, the Subject Access certificates show absolutely everything the PNC holds on you. I'd like to know if any of you know what the situation is like now especially with regards to China? I would also like to know what's the best way of gaining employment. It doesn't have to be a really good job to begin with. Over the last few years I've been working as a HGV driver and other non-skilled positions.....hardly what a school would be looking for in terms of prior work experience of a prospective teacher. So, references might be a bit of a problem. I'm also out of work right now. I do have a TEFL certificate from the mid 90's. Any advice much appreciated.
