It's not exactly breaking news, but I've been meaning to post this for some time, and have finally got round to it. "The Clink" is a restaurant where the majority of the staff are inmates of HMP High Down in Banstead, Surrey, most of whom go on to land catering jobs upon release. It was the winner of last year's Longford Prize (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longford_Prize). There's more about it in this article from the Independent (AndyH, you're not the only lefty on this site :-)) : www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/news/longford-prize-the-clink--a-prison-diner-no-one-wants-to-escape-6264038.html.

Hopefully this will prompt some reminiscences from IanC and others about prison catering facilities in times gone by!

An open letter and 'Greetings brothers/comrades' (or whatever). :-)

I send you fraternal greetings and I've just read Charles Dickens and isn't it just dreadful the conditions you all have to live under in the lands of the running dogs capitalist system! I'm outraged and I've ordered everyone else to be outraged as well; in fact I've ordered a free popular workers demonstration in the streets to protest your conditions and I was going to send you (freepost) a food parcel of rice as a gift from the people, but unfortunately the greedy sods have eaten it already and I can't find anymore. Never mind, let's just pretend I sent it and you can pretend you enjoyed it. You better you capitalist scum or I'll  Sorry, typo error, don't worry about it, I'll have the typist shot, no problem. (Can't get the staff nowadays). shakehead

The 'clink project' is a capitalist lie. I know because we do the same thing here. We read a menu, the masses pretend to swallow and are then charged full price for the meal! As they haven't any money they have to work on Sundays for free to pay for it. I get to keep compulsory tips, 10% extra, but don't tell anyone will you, it's our little secret. Don't you just starve your lot to death? It's a lot cheaper, but hey, you know, democracy brothers, do your own thing.

By the way, if any of you know that nasty capitalist pig Cameron, can you ask him where my foreign aid is? It's just that I'm a bit strapped for cash at the moment, (that new Rolls Royce has wiped me out - you wouldn't believe what they charge . . . !) and I'm having to reduce the workers rations still further and the buggers are starting to die like flies. The menu thing isn't working as they've started to eat the paper and that's extra expense having to print more, out of my pocket as well! shakehead

Yours. The Dear (simply gorgeous) leader. The Marmite il sung workers Party Central Commitee. (I named it after myself, good idea eh? I said GOOD IDEA EH)? Yeah! Don't let me hear you laughing you running dog reactionaries, you better believe it)! nono

And so the revolution continues, onwards brother AndyH and fellow comrade into the glorious red future, (me leading you of course). lol

Yes, I suppose I could tell you the menu from years ago, but perhaps it would only induce people to talk of how much progress there's been. This project must be good if it provides post release work, but I sense a one off gimmik? However, prison is now a lifestyle for many and in that respect it's anything but progress. I'm not totally correlating prison conditions with regimes, except to say that there wasn't anything like the recidivism then or prison numbers. Somewhere along the way prison lost it's purpose and one of those purposes was the deterrent effect in the punishment model.

Right, let’s start. Where’s my glasses? Step over here Andy, closer . . . into the light where I can see you. Humph, as I thought . . . you’ve got a touch of socialism! lol

Also, joking aside. Yes, the N. Koreans do, as did the Chinese and Russians at one point and every other dictatorship. The truth is that N. Korea does believe that it is democratic and socialist and I suppose if you believe it for long enough you come to accept it as fact. That’s the irony of socialism/communism – there is no such thing, but wishful thinking that there is. One man’s socialism is another mans dictatorship and the only difference is that no two socialists can ever agree on what socialism really is. It’s like trying to prove an abstract theory and going round in circles. Only capitalist aid supports socialism and without it, it couldn’t exist.

With all due respect

Hi highcryer,

Does that make us the UNLOCK Popular People's Front?! Reminds me of that great bit in Life of Brian "Whatever happened to the Judean Popular People's Front Geoff? Isn't that him over there!

Great that there are positive news stories about The Clink - a really good project.

You are a silly bugger sometimes Ian! :-) But that's why we love you!

Joking aside, I was reading a while ago that in North Korean schools they use Dickens as a way of 'educating' children about what conditions are like in Britain! You have to appreciate the irony of a country that describes itself as a democratic socialist state having a dynastic monarchical succession for who should be leader. Couldn't stop laughing when Sasha Baron Cohen spilt what were supposed to be Kim-Jong Il's ashes all over that reporter at the Oscars whilst flanked by a pair of female 'bodyguards' and dressed as a military dictator.
